About the data

WHERE DOES THE DATA COME FROM?

Our business databases are compiled from a range of sources. Data from a number of different databases (public and private), our own customers supply data back to us and in addition we also use the internet to supplement our data collection as well as for data cross checking. Each list is washed against each other and then washed against public databases such as the Australian Business Names Register. Our final database is therefore a compilation of many sources. Each record may contain a components from the different sources. In this way we are able to establish if a record exists from more than one source and we populate the various data fields from these different sources.

All collected data is then cross matched to eliminate stray and dubious records, duplicates (as far as possible) as well as "dead" records. In addition all emails, websites and fax numbers are frequently tested so as to remove invalid or discontinued numbers and addresses. We also maintain our own dead record database to assist in removing defunct records as well as information that individuals or companies may request to be suppressed or removed.

We extensively clean our database records using a number of techniques and other available databases (e.g. Australia Post address file, Australian Business Register, Australian telephone data).

DID TELSTRA HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THIS KIND OF DATA?

A number of data suppliers have directly copied the Yellow Pages and because of this had issues with Telstra regarding copyright.
Our database is not a copy of the Yellow Pages, it is compiled from a number of different sources. The main database core was tested by Telstra and they established the data not to be a direct copy of the Yellow Pages and is therefore not subject to their copyright.

HOW UP TO DATE IS THE DATA?

We take great care to maintain our databases and keep the data as up-to-date as possible with frequent refreshes of the data.
Please refer to the details of each database to check the currency of the data.

HOW ACCURATE IS THE DATA?

Some of our competitors claim that their data is 100% accurate. This is not possible because businesses change their contact information with time and some businesses even close. We go to a lot of effort to ensure that the information in our lists is as accurate as possible through regular checking and data updating. We've been supplying business data for over 12 years and have many repeat customers.

WHAT INFORMATION IS INCLUDED IN THE DATA?

The following fields are in the Australian business databases:
Organisation name, address (street or PO Box), suburb, state, postcode, geographic region, telephone number, fax, email, website, social media details (Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook), est. number of employees, date business commenced, ABN number and ABN details, business heading, ANZSIC classification, geocode information (latitude, longitude, map-link). Contact details and job descriptions.
Please note that not all fields are populated and additional information may be restricted to the premium version of the database

Full details of the database contents can be found on the respective product pages.

IS THE DATA PRIVACY COMPLIANT?

Yes. The data you receive is non-personalised which means you receive the company’s name, address, phone number, fax number and an email address where available.

ARE EMAILS AND TEXT MESSAGES SUBJECT TO THE SPAM ACT?

Yes, under the provisions of the Spam Act 2003 it is illegal to, among other things, send, or cause to be sent, 'unsolicited commercial electronic messages' that have an Australian link. Email addresses listed in the data are not classified as "opt-in" and therefore you should take all care when using any email addresses that they comply with the Spam Act 2003. A message has an 'Australian link' if it either originates or was commissioned in Australia, or originates overseas but has been sent to an address accessed in Australia.

The Act covers email, instant messaging, SMS and MMS (text and image-based mobile phone messaging) of a commercial nature. It does not cover faxes or voice telemarketing. A practical guide for business is available on the link below.

We highly advise you to research the applicable email/spam laws before creating a campaign to make sure you don’t get break the law. The emails contained within our data are ‘found’ contact details aka everything we know about a particular business – which may include email addresses, fax numbers, ABN numbers and more. Just because it exists on our database it does not give you any extra permission to do anything in particular with the data. For example: the laws state that most businesses are exempt from the Do Not Call Register – this means you can tele-market to most business numbers without ‘washing your list’ against the DNCR first. However bulk emailing generally requires email addresses that have opt-in permissions which is usually very expensive and has many restrictions due to the complex nature of keeping each user ‘opted in’ and happy to be receiving bulk email. To reiterate, there are no express or implied permissions included, so it’s up to your organisation to use this data in a legal context and comply with any local laws.

You need to know that the email addresses in the database are not "opt-in" or permission based. The emails contained in our data are 'found' contact details, that is everything we know about a particular business, which may include email addresses, fax numbers, ABN numbers & more. They were collected from business directories and public records.

You should be aware of Australia’s Anti-Spam Laws put in place to prevent abuse of email marketing. The ACMA manages this in Australia, here is a link to them where you can get more information:  http://www.acma.gov.au/

Please note that by purchasing a list from us, does not give you permission to Spam people. You as the sender should be aware of the rules concerning bulk emailing. We accept no responsibility for the messages you send and will not be held liable.

Opt-in or permission based email lists can be extremely expensive.

For more information please visit the Australian Communications and Media Agency website. We also have a guide for email marketing you can download.

USING THE DATA

HOW MANY TIMES CAN I USE THE DATA?

You can use the data as many times as you wish and for as long as you wish. Remember though over time the data will age. We find around 15-20% changes a year for either new businesses, businesses being removed or essential details changing.

HOW DO I FIND BUSINESSES BY TYPE?

Datajet uses our own proprietary heading classification which offers over 2,400 individual business classifications, similar to those found in a business telephone directory.

We also classify each record with the equivalent ANZSIC (Australian New Zealand Standard Industry Classification) code and description.
Download our full heading classification list.

HOW DOES THE DO NOT CALL REGISTER RELATE TO THE DATA?

In order for a number to be included on the do not call register, it must be used or maintained primarily for private or domestic purposes – this means business numbers are exempt from the DNCR (Do Not Call Register). Government body numbers, emergency services numbers & fax numbers are now able to be entered on the register – this means you shouldn’t need to wash the data from our business database unless you plan on calling these particular numbers.

Business telephone numbers are not subject to the provisions of the DNCR. Business data supplied by Datajet has therefore not been washed against the "Do Not Call Register” (DNCR) for the removal of any telephone numbers that may appear in the Register.

Business fax numbers are subject to the DNCR. Fax numbers listed in our databases have not been washed against the DNCR.

Users of our residential lists should be aware that residential/private individuals who are registered with the DNCR cannot be called for telemarketing purposes except only under special provisions of the legislation governing the "Do Not Call Register" - for more information see DNCR website. Data exported from our residential database will need to be washed against the DNCR. Simply export the lists you intend to call within the next 30 days and send them to the DNCR for washing.

It is therefore the responsibility of the individual or corporation using data supplied by Datajet to take all reasonable steps to ensure that any telephone numbers used are not registered with the "Do Not Call Register” where appropriate.

CAN I USE THE DATA MORE THAN ONCE?

Yes, you can use this information as often as you would like. We only ask that you do not distribute the data or publish it.

CAN I USE THE DATA IN A WEBSITE, SOFTWARE APPLICATION OR RESELL THE DATA?

The data you purchase is subject to our single user only licence does not allow not for publication online, use in a software application or distribution either free or paid.. Please contact us if you would like to use the data in an online database, software application or to resell the data.
